Frequently asked questions

  • Do my files get uploaded to a server?

No. HEIC conversion, compression, and merging all happen entirely in your browser. Files never leave your device.

  • What can I convert from HEIC?

iPhone HEIC and HEIF photos can be converted to JPG (smaller, photo-friendly) or PNG (lossless). Output quality is configurable for JPG.

  • Which image formats does the auto converter accept?

Drop HEIC, HEIF, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, JPG, or PNG. Filespresso detects the format from the file itself (not the extension) and converts it to JPG or PNG locally.

  • Which video formats can I convert to MP3 or GIF?

MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV, AVI, 3GP, and other common containers. The first conversion downloads a small WebAssembly build of FFmpeg into your browser. Later conversions are instant.

  • Why does the first video conversion take a moment?

The video tools use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The engine is roughly 9 MB on the wire and is fetched the first time you convert. After that, your browser caches it.

  • Which image formats can I compress?

JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and BMP. Output is JPEG, WebP, or PNG depending on the format you pick.

  • How small can a PDF get?

It depends on the PDF. Image-heavy PDFs (scans, photo albums) compress dramatically, often 80 to 95% smaller. Text-only PDFs are usually already small and may not shrink much.

  • Is there a file size limit?

Limits come from your device, not the app. Modern laptops handle PDFs of several hundred MB. Phones and older devices may struggle with very large files because every page is loaded into memory for a moment.

  • Does it work offline?

After the first visit, your browser keeps a copy of the app, so you can use Filespresso without an internet connection.
